Please share a memory of Satya to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dr. Satya “Rocky” Rochlani, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on August the 6th, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Shikarpur, India in 1929. He graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Madras, India in 1955. In 1958 he moved to the University of Minnesota where he completed the first two years of his Anatomic Pathology residency before moving to the University of Colorado to finish his residency.
He first joined WVU in 1962 as a chief resident in Pathology. He then accepted a fellowship in cancer research at the Banting Institute at the University of Toronto. Upon completion of his fellowship and his Master’s degree in Pathology, Satya returned to WVU in 1966 as an assistant professor of Pathology. He immediately became active in student education as the course coordinator of the Dental school Pathology course. In 1971, he was granted associate professorship. In 1980 Satya spent one year studying Cardiovascular pathology at Duke University. Upon his return he established the Cardiovascular Pathology Society at the WVU.
In 1981, Satya became the course coordinator for medical students’ Pathology course – a role for which he was best known. Dedicated to improving student education, he added a surgical pathology clinical correlation and an autopsy review to the course. Always the student advocate, he had been active in the national organization for course coordinators called GRIPE and served as its vice president in 1991. Satya retired from WVU in 1996 as professor emeritus and the students of the health sciences class of 1996 dedicated the Pylon (their yearbook) to him.
Satya is survived by his wife of fifty years Maya, his sister Savitri, son Neil, daughter Neeta and her husband Chris Angus and twin grandchildren Kai and Sonali. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Shakuntla and his brother Prakash.
