Martha Custis Thorn age 92 of Waynesburg, formerly of Morgantown passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Monongalia General Hospital. She was born August 13, 1923 in Pursglove a daughter of the late Joseph and Cora McAndrews Jerome.
Martha had been employed at G.C. Murphys in Morgantown and Waynesburg. She was a member of the Fort Martin United Methodist Church and after moving to Waynesburg attended the Jefferson Baptist Church.
Martha was a loving and generous person who was always helping others. She was an active member of the Morgantown VFW # 548 Ladies Auxiliary, she was a volunteer for the Monongalia General Hospital with over a thousand hours of service. Martha served as a volunteer at both the Chestnut Hills Nutrition Site and the Senior Monongalians. With a loving heart and generous spirit she used her seamstress skills to create baby quilts for Children’s Hospitals and lap quilts for the veterans that have found homes all across the United States.
Martha is survived by two daughters, Nelda Kern and husband Barry of Jefferson, PA and Linda Virgili and significant other Jerry Kosik of Bella Vista Arkansas, seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband Richard Thorn and one son William Thorn.
Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home 770 Fairmont Road, Morgantown from 2-6 pm Sunday and on Monday from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service with Pastor John Dorean officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Martin Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Fort Martin Church c/o Lucille Jamison at 1153 Fort Martin Rd.
