Bill retired from a career in construction management with, among other companies, Roberts & Schaefer Company. Bill served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955, during the Korean War, as an Aviation Electrician aboard the USS Leyte as a member of Attack Squadron VA-35, and on the USS Tarawa; both Essex-class aircraft carriers. Bill was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9916, in Westover. For decades he was a volunteer with the Westover Volunteer Fire Department, before becoming an Honorary Member.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Nancy McGowan Bell, and husband David, of Morgantown; son, Michael Torres McGowan and wife Robin, of North Little Rock; three grandsons, James Cameron Lassiter, and wife Kristen, of Richardson, TX, Robert Calen Lassiter of Dallas, TX, and Sean Michael McGowan of North Little Rock; and sister-in -law Bonnie McGowan of Phoenix, AZ.
