Well I really don't know what to say. I was 15 when I met this good doctor. I was extremely small for my age and still hadn't hit puberty and my local GYN didn't have a tool small enough to examine me and so I was sent to this sweet man. He discovered something about me that he drew out on the paper that covers the bed in the room so that my young brain could comprehend what he was saying. He discovered I'm a thalidomide baby. After several exploratory laparoscopies he found out that the drug most likely affected my growth hormone which caused pituitary gland and other issues that all affected my growth. I have been trying to find him because he hold s a piece of the puzzle that could explain my current health situation (that he was on the brink of discovering all those years ago) I even wonder if my very strange problem urged him to go even deeper to understand women's fertility. I'm sorry I missed my chance to thank him as an adult and to possibly come full circle with what he had discovered all those years ago.
I'm sure that everyone he touched was made better because of it. I know that when he told me I would never be able to get pregnant or carry a baby, I had a meltdown and nearly broke his glasses on his face at the news, and I always meant to go back and apologize for that. I know this is not the proper place to be saying all this stuff because a bunch of strangers will read this, but it should comfort you to know that even someone who only met him for a couple of years as a young child has never stopped thinking about the impact he had on gathering pieces of evidence and recruitment of colleagues.... Researching..... Trying to find the right medicine to start my development so I can blossom into the woman I was meant to be. Here is an integral part of Discovery in that stage of my life and I really wish I could have gotten a hold of my records from all those years ago. I hope everybody knows what a wonderful diligent Dr. he was to me all those years ago so I can't even imagine how wonderful he became all these years later. I'm so sorry I missed hugging his neck and reuniting with him after 30 years, I miss him just by a couple months!!
Be at peace and know Jehovah will not foret all the love and Good works he did in his Earthly Course.

I apologize for sending this so late, as I just found out about Dr. Toffle. There are not enough words to express how amazing, caring, kind, compassionate, and determined person and doctor he was to my husband and I.
We went through a lot trying to get pregnant. Thanks to Dr. Toffle's determination, we were blessed with twin boys who will be 14-years-old in July. Thanks to Dr. Toffle, he helped us become parents. We became close with Dr. Toffle. When we had our first appointment at Ruby's high-risk clinic (Dr. Toffle sent us there and I didn't want to leave him) we heard a knock on the exam room door, and it was him. He made it a point to be at our first appointment. I can't even express how much that meant to us. He always shared stories of being in the navy and Italy, and he and my husband even had some one-on-one conversations and listed to Italian music. We tell our boys about Dr. Toffle all the time, because he is the reason they are here.
To us, he was an angel and no one will ever be able to fill his shoes. I thank God everyday for putting Dr. Toffle on this earth to help couples, like us, become parents. Not only was he an angel on earth, he has definitely earned his angel wings in Heaven.
May you find comfort and peace in the stories and words shared with you about your husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, and friend.
With deepest sympathies and love,
Julie, John, Dominico, and Jovanni Minnocci

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Roger. His humorous nature left an indelible impression on all those who knew him. I had the privilege of meeting him as a young nurse, and although he may have initially come across as gruff, his compassionate care for patients spoke volumes about his character. It was heartwarming to witness him take on tasks such as cleaning the OR with a mop, demonstrating his willingness to do whatever it takes to provide excellent care. Rest in peace, Roger - you will be greatly missed.

Sorry to hear of Dr. Toffle's passing. We were blessed to have had him as our doctor throughout the pregnancy of our first child in 1997. He was very attentive to every situation that we had on the night of delivery and even stayed in the hospital and checked on me periodically. With the help of Dr. Toffle, he blessed us with two beautiful children but he only saw the birth of our oldest child. He will be missed.

A good friend from the past. Roger was a founding member of a group of dedicated, if disparate OB-GYN/PEDIATRIC NEONATOLOGISTS who founded the WV perinatal care network back I the late 70’s in addition to being a hockey nut when most West Virginians did not know what a pic was. Roger also represented the state well as WV section chair to District 4 of ACOG. He was a great doc and a good friend.

I was sorry to learn of Dr. Toffle's passing and send my deepest condolences. As a new junior faculty member in the 1990s, Dr. Toffle was our hero when our colleague gave birth after months and months of trying to conceive. More than two decades later, I discovered Dr. Toffle in my mother's garden at Heritage Point, tilling and weeding, an arrangement orchestrated by our church who had offered to find help for older members in need. I was more than embarrassed that mother had 'not wanted to bother me because i was so busy' upon finding that the worker in overalls was none other than the former OB/GYN department chair. And as if the gardening was not enough of a gift, Dr. Toffle returned with a pink petting glove for mother's cat which she cherished and used until her death. As a nephrologist at WVU, I had little to no interaction with Dr. Toffle, though I remember him with esteem. The humility and the kindness he showed my mother are memories I will cherish. Wishing you comfort and peace, Rebecca Schmidt Abel

I have known Roger and Connie since 1974 when I was a Navy Nurse at Balboa Naval Hospital. I always thought Roger was one of the best doctors and became a very sweet friend. We stayed in touch all these year by texts---and mostly discussed our favorite singers Fleetwood Mac and how their songs reminded us so much of our lives----3000 miles apart. I stayed on the west coast in San Diego and then WA state but he was always there to chat (text) and at times talked me off that ledge. I love reading all the comments about what a fabulous doctor he was and how everyone loved him. I am not surprised. He sure was loved and gave love back to his friends. He will be terribly missed but we know he is no longer in pain and he will be there with open arms for the hugs that he loved to give when we meet him in Heaven. They don't make many men/doctors like Roger. HIs love of hockey, his wife, his 3 children, his grandchildren and all his friends was so amazing. He lived a happy and good life. An amazing man. Love from his long distance friend, Ann (Stevens) MacPherson in central WA.

I was blessed with a beautiful baby boy because of Dr. Toffle.
One day, the office was slow. We were done with my appointment. He asked me if I’d ever seen Monty Pythons Holy Grail. I told him I hadn’t. So we, along with another office staff member, went in to his laptop and he showed us his favorite scene, “it’s only a flesh wound”. I can still hear him laughing. I like to think I was one of few people he shared that with.
He will be greatly missed.

I will forever be grateful to have worked with and learn from Dr. Toffle. He was a brilliant man who knew a little bit about everything and a whole lot about a lot of things. His greatest professional legacy may be in helping his patients achieve pregnancy and become parents, but he was so much more than an infertility specialist. Most of all, he loved his family. At work, he talked proudly about his wife, children, and grandchildren.
He was definitely the unsung hero of the OBGYN Department. He was truly a "jack of all trades", always stepping in where needed. Many providers experienced Dr. Toffle miraculously showing up to help when they needed an extra hand in an emergency. When our department was without a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist, he filled in and helped me keep the High Risk OB Clinic running while also serving as interim Chair and continuing to provide infertility care.
With his unique teaching skills, Dr. Toffle made sure our residents graduated with the knowledge and skills to provide excellent care. He took the time to teach everyone and had the knack of quickly producing a power point when asked a question.
Not surprising, even during his fight with cancer, he showed incredible strength. He worked tirelessly to help build the West Run Woods Biking Trail. He was there volunteering and working so much that many thought he was one of the contractors, and he was honored for his work and dedication at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
I was lucky to have worked with Dr. Toffle. He will be so missed by so many. Peace and love to his family.

He helped my husband and me through a very disappointing time in our lives with his humor, compassion, and pragmatism. I will miss our political discussions and his laser-sharp wit. He was a wonderful physician, both his patients and healthcare co- workers were fortunate to have him for their care and education. He treated everyone withe respect whether you were housekeeping or the Chairman of the department. He was not above scrubbing the delivery room floor, if the unit was busy and this was needed. I felt very comfortable with high risk deliveries or patients who were critical when Dr. Toffle was on the unit. I still remember him running from the POC to L&D for stat C/S's and saving many babies and momas. He helped several of my friends with infertility, they went on to have a family because of him. His family should know what a wonderful Dr.and kind-hearted person he was, but I'm sure they know that first hand. My condolences to his family.

Dr Toffle,
I will forever cherish the years I worked at WVU L&D. You were an amazing mentor, leader and a forever friend. You were on the forefront of reproductive endocrinology. There are so many couples who are parents thanks to your compassion and dedication to reproductive medicine. My world is a better place because of the opportunity to work with an amazing, compassionate physician. I will never forget how you would jump in and clean a room or the OR when things were crazy and we needed space for a patient. You are the only physician I have ever known to mop a floor to facilitate safe patient care. Rest in peace my dear friend. You will be missed forever.
Love,

Roger was of the very best physicians I have worked with in my career. He assisted countless people to become parents and along the way trained so many residents to become outstanding OBGYNs. He valued nurse’s opinions and truly considered patient care to be a team effort. Anyone working with him rose to the occasion because no one wanted to disappoint him, and no one worked harder than him. He also made work a ton of fun! He will be so missed!
