Obituary of Avery Loraine (Whetzel) Reese
Please share a memory of Avery to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Avery Loraine (Whetzel) Reese peacefully left this earth on March 2, 2023. Loraine loved others intensely and her hugs were treasured. She welcomed many into her heart and home while making all feel exceptional. With the most tender heart, she adored and attended to her husband, Herschel, her truest love. Loraine’s sincere faith in our Lord Jesus Christ provided her the gift and capacity to love countless others without condition.
Loraine’s kitchen was an active gathering place where family and visitors were always fed good meals and treats. She cherished conversations and time spent with family and friends and had the ability to warmly envelop people into her life. As a grandmother, Loraine was a remarkable woman. She was a brilliant combination of warmth and kindness, laughter, and love. She overlooked faults, encouraged dreams, and praised their every success. She was gifted in organization and creativity which showed in wedding planning and family reunions. Loraine will be remembered as a lover of family, friends, gardening, reading, Elvis, and puzzles.
Loraine graduated as a registered nurse in 1958 after attending Fairmont State College in West Virginia. She practiced the profession with great care and integrity while working in West Virginia, Florida, Louisiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. Her passion for gardening led her to be a charter member of the Midland Great Lakes Gardeners. In Midland, King’s Daughters Home, Dahlia Hill, and Midland Blooms all benefited from her commitment to the beauty of plants and flowers.
Loraine was an original member of the Rif-Raf Book Club and an anchor member of The Dinner Club which met once a month for almost 20 years. Through the Midland United Methodist Church, Loraine participated in Bible Study Fellowship which rooted her in God’s word.
Loraine and Herschel traveled extensively and lived in Geneva Switzerland for five years. Many miles were flown to see the world together from India, Africa, Middle East, Europe, South America, Asia and even traveling the Silk Road in China. They are blessed with friends from around the globe who will remember her great laugh and compassion.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years, Herschel Henry Reese; children and spouses, Herschel (Julie) Reese, Clifford (Janine) Reese, and Allison (Kent) Lowe. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Kathryn and Dane Adams (Westin, Theodore, Sloane), Jennifer and John Galbraith (Luke), Alex Reese, Caleb and Elaina Reese, Sophie and Kyle Piurkowski (Leo), Asher Reese, Erin Lowe, Alec Lowe; one sister, her twin, Loretta Faulknier along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, David and Leila Whetzel, Loraine was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Virgil Lee Whetzel, Vernon Whetzel, Shirley Ann James, Jean Ayers, David Whetzel, Edna Myers, Clyde Whetzel and one grandchild, Erika Lowe.
Please consider donations to King’s Daughters Home of Midland (2410 Rodd Street, Midland, MI 48640) or a charity of your choice to fondly remember our beloved Loraine.
